Conditions we care for

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS)

Also referred to as myocardial infarction or unstable angina. We treat symptoms of acute coronary syndrome at our world-class hospitals.

Angina

Angina is a condition that results in pain in the chest, among other symptoms, due to a reduction in the flow of blood to the heart muscles.

Aortic regurgitation

One of two main types of aortic valve disease, where the valve allows blood to flow backwards into your heart.

Aortic stenosis

Aortic valve stenosis occurs when the aortic valve, located in the heart, narrows or gets blocked. This can restrict the blood flow around the body and cause a range of symptoms and serious health problems.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC)

A  rare type of cardiomyopathy, when part of the muscle of the right ventricle is replaced by fat, which can lead to heart failure and heart rhythm disorders.

Atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is a heart rhythm abnormality that affects over two million people in the UK and raises the risk of serious health complications, yet often goes undiagnosed.

Atrial flutter

An atrial flutter causes the heart to beat faster increasing heart pressure. HCA UK offers diagnosis, monitoring and treatment when needed.

Atrial tachycardia

Atrial tachycardia is a form of supraventricular tachycardiac (SVT), an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) that causes a sudden, rapid heart beat.

Blood clots

Blood clots are lumps of blood that can form in your veins and arteries. These can be dangerous and cause medical emergencies.

Bradycardia

Bradycardia is diagnosed when a heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute is recorded. You may have a slow heart rate if you're very fit or relaxed, on certain medications or have an underactive thyroid. It can also signify a problem with your heart's electrical impulses and cause symptoms like fatigue or dizziness.

Cardiac arrhythmia

Arrhythmia is any disturbance of the normal electrical activity of your heart, causing an irregular or abnormally fast or slow heartbeat. They’re common and often highly treatable or manageable.

Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy refers to diseases of the heart muscle that affect how effectively it can pump blood around your body.

Childhood stroke

If the blood supply to your child’s brain is blocked (ischaemic) or a blood vessel in their brain bursts (haemorrhagic) they can have a sudden stroke. If you suspect your child is having a stroke, call 999 immediately. Our specialists are here to support your child with follow up treatment and care such as physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy.

One or more of your heart valves becomes damaged or diseased. The diseased or damaged heart valve can affect the flow of blood in your heart in one of two ways.

We provide exceptional care across our network of hospitals, outpatient centres and specialist clinics for diagnostic testing.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

From complex cardiothoracic surgery to diagnostic tests and procedures, we provide exceptional cardiac care across our network of hospitals and specialist clinics.

From complex neurology to diagnostic tests and procedures, we provide exceptional treatment and therapy care across our network of hospitals, outpatient centres and specialist clinics.

Mitral valve regurgitation

From complex cardiothoracic surgery to diagnostic tests and procedures, we provide exceptional cardiac care across our network of hospitals, outpatient centres and specialist clinics.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CARDIAC CARE JOURNEY

What to expect
Whether you have a worrying new heart symptom or an ongoing cardiac condition that needs looking after, we’ll keep you informed and reassured at every stage, making sure you have all the facts and the specialist support you need.

Below you’ll find an outline of what to expect, but our teams will always be here to explain everything in person.  If you have any questions about your cardiac condition or your care, we’ll be happy to help.

01

Initial consultation

You may have a referral from a GP or you’re also welcome to self-refer if you feel you need to get your heart health checked. Either way, just call the cardiac referral line on 020 7616 4988 and we’ll get you booked in with one of our consultant cardiologists for an initial consultation.

They’ll always start with a thorough physical assessment. They’ll discuss your symptoms and general health with you in detail too, including asking about your family’s heart history. You’ll have the chance to talk about what’s worrying you and ask any questions you have.

02

Tests and scans

Your consultant may book you in to have a range of initial tests and scans, some of which may happen on that same day. Depending on your initial consultation these may include:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to check your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity
  • Echocardiogram (ECHO) to look at the structure of your heart and valves as well as providing information on the function and pumping action of your heart
  • A 24-hour tape and exercise test, which will be reviewed with the most appropriate specialist

03

Results and diagnosis

You’ll want to know the results of your tests as soon as possible, so we’ll have the cardiology investigations back with you within 48 hours. These will be reviewed by your consultant cardiologist in a follow-up consultation. They’ll be able to confirm a diagnosis based on the results of your tests and scans.

04

Treatment

Your consultant will discuss your treatment options, which might be anything from ongoing monitoring to lifestyle changes, medication or urgent surgery. They’ll discuss the risks and benefits with you, and you’ll have lots of time to ask questions, weigh up your options and decide on the best course of action.

They can also advise if any further tests are needed and get those booked in, helping to maintain momentum and quickly get you onto the best management or treatment pathway. If you need surgery, you’ll be referred to the right surgical specialist within the extended HCA UK care network.

05

James shares his cardiac story.jpg

How a health kick revealed a serious heart condition

When the UK went into lockdown in March 2020, like millions of others, 56-year-old House Manager James took the opportunity to introduce some simple daily exercise into his busy work schedule. Little did he know that the changes would reveal a hidden heart condition, that would require a triple heart bypass to fix.

"Time is of the essence with my heart, as I have diabetes"

Saleem, 57, keeps an active lifestyle to remain fit and healthy. He plays badminton once a week and goes for a walk in the morning and evening every day. Despite having type 2 diabetes, he continues to have a balanced and energetic life.

From the day I arrived for my angiogram, to the moment I was discharged, I was treated like royalty... (Everyone) went out of their way to be kind and supportive.
