Lung care at HCA UK

Why choose us?

At HCA UK you’ll get the expert care and advice you need when you need it, with accelerated pathways to treatment tailored to your specific needs.

Our experienced lung care teams offer specialist care for all lung conditions, from common respiratory disorders to lung cancers and infectious diseases including tuberculosis.

And, should you need it, you’ll also have access to the most extensive private respiratory and thoracic offering - both surgical and non-surgical - in the UK with our thoracic surgery service.

Lung conditions can vary hugely vary both in terms of their severity and their treatment. Our specialists can help with diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of different lung conditions, from respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD and emphysema, through to lung cancer, tuberculosis and even sleep apnoea.
If you have a persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing or chest pain, or you’re coughing up excessive mucus or blood, these could indicate a lung condition that should be investigated.

Concerned about your symptoms?
If you’re experiencing common symptoms of a lung condition or think you may have increased risk of an underlying lung disease, we can help with a lung health check. It’s a low-dose CT scan of your chest, and you can get fast access to that check at most of our hospitals.

We’ll take detailed 2D and 3D images of your chest, which can help your consultant diagnose a range of conditions including cancers, asthma and infections.

We have some of the fastest, low-dose CT scanners in the UK, so you’ll get a clear diagnosis with very minimal exposure to radiation.

Lung care FAQs

At HCA UK, we believe that many expert heads deliver the best answers. That’s why we take a collaborative multidisciplinary team approach, regularly coming together across specialisms and cases to discuss complex thoracic oncology and other lung problems. This cross-pollination of ideas helps us to make more accurate diagnoses and shape truly first-class treatment pathways.
Yes, we can. Lung nodules are usually benign, and don’t automatically mean something more serious is going on, but they should always be checked by a specialist consultant.

We have the first private hospital in the UK to use the Ion™ platform (position-sensing Robotic Navigation Bronchoscopy) which helps us diagnose previously difficult to reach lung nodules. It’s a fast diagnostic tool that can remove months of waiting and help determine appropriate treatment much earlier.
The single biggest way to keep your lungs healthy is to avoid smoking or quit as soon as possible. Other ways to help keep your lungs in good condition include maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and staying up to date with any vaccinations such as the flu jab.

Lung care stories

Nick Farrow patient story.jpg

Nick's story: Getting back on my feet after a rare thymoma diagnosis

In November 2020, Nick Farrow was due to undergo surgery at Norwich Hospital, but in a tale with many twists and turns, he instead underwent robotic thoracic surgery at London Bridge Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK. Here, Nick shares his healthcare journey with us, and how fortunate he feels that he was able to benefit from the unique expertise of The London Bridge Thoracic Services team at London Bridge Hospital when he needed it most.

Everyone I met was so lovely. I was asked on the hospital feedback form if I’d like to mention specific members of staff but there were just too many to name.
