YOUR CHILD’S TREATMENT WITH HCA UK

What to expect

Our skilled, experienced paediatric consultants and dedicated teams treat children, infants and young people for a very wide range of conditions, illnesses and injuries. However old your child is, whatever their condition, we’re devoted to ensuring that your child feels safe, informed and cared for at every stage.

The specific treatment your child receives will depend on their individual condition, but this will give you an idea of what to expect from the process.

01

Referral

The process will usually begin with a referral from a GP – your own GP or one from HCA UK – to one of our dedicated paediatric consultants. You can also refer your child yourself, by calling our paediatric line on 020 7390 8020. We can usually arrange an appointment within 24 hours.

02

Initial assessment

Your consultant will ask you and/or your child about their symptoms, their medical history, your wider family medical history, and give you time to share your questions and concerns. They will usually carry out a thorough physical examination too. Depending on their findings and your child’s condition, they may arrange for further tests and scans, input from a wider multi-disciplinary team, medication or a course of treatment.

03

Treatment

Your child’s treatment will depend entirely on the specifics of their condition and could range from lifestyle changes or medication through to complex surgery. Whatever the circumstances, our expert paediatric consultants and caring, dedicated teams will look after them with kindness, reassurance and clarity. Your consultant will talk through every aspect of your child’s treatment with you both and keep you informed at every stage.

And we’ll give you a clear and transparent quote from the start, outlining exactly what’s included in your self-pay package.

Paediatric care FAQs

Paediatricians specialise in diagnosing, treating and managing a wide range of medical conditions that specifically affect infants, children and young people. That can include everyday treatment such as vaccinations, regular checkups and monitoring growth and development, right up to more serious conditions such as congenital defects and hormonal problems, and issues that need urgent medical care.
A referral to a paediatrician would usually come from a GP or other medical professional, because of concerns about your child’s health that require specialist diagnosis, treatment and management. Our expert and experienced paediatricians are dedicated to providing first-rate care for you and your child, at every stage.
The usual age range for paediatric patients is from birth until 18 years old. However, for patients aged between 16-18, there can be some flexibility to allow them to be treated by adult specialists if that’s a better fit for their clinical needs or preferences.

Pick-up and drop-off options: Visitors can pick up and drop off patients at the main entrance. No parking is allowed as the driveway is for emergency vehicle access.

Local parking: There’s no on-site parking and street parking isn’t permitted on a single yellow line between Monday and Saturday, from 8.30am to 6.30pm. However, national and private car parks are available nearby. Please contact the admissions team if you need help to find a local car park near to the hospital.

Disabled parking: Westminster Council operates a small number of disabled parking bays near the hospital, available to Blue Badge holders for up to four hours. The nearest one is on the corner of Bolsover Street, next to Tesco Express.

At The Portland Hospital, we have open visiting. However, we recommend that visitors leave by 10pm. If your child’s staying overnight, this gives both parents and child the chance to settle for the night.

Should you wish to stay overnight with your child, you can (in fact, we actively encourage this). We can provide you with a bed for one parent.

Of course. You’re very welcome to go to the anaesthetic room, where you can stay until your child’s asleep. At that point, the nurse will accompany you back to your room.

Patient stories

My mum and I were overwhelmed with the level of care I received at The Portland Hospital and The Harley Street Clinic. We felt so safe and cared for.
