Knee conditions

Some of the conditions we treat
The knee is the largest joint in your body, where three bones, ligaments and cartilage all work together. With so much going on in one area, it's important to see a specialist who can accurately find out what's causing your pain or condition.

Anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL)

A full or partial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear can cause pain and instability. Our orthopaedic specialists provide rapid diagnosis and expert treatment to restore movement and support your return to an active lifestyle.

Meniscal injury

A meniscal injury can cause pain, swelling and limited movement. HCA UK offers expert diagnosis and tailored treatment to relieve symptoms, restore knee function and support a lasting recovery.

Our knee treatments

Some of the treatments we offer
Whatever the problem, we'll guide you through your treatment options and help you return to your everyday life, including any exercise and activities.

Ultrasound-guided injections

An injection of an anti-inflammatory drug, guided by ultrasound. Steroid injections into the joint can be an effective way to treat orthopaedic pain caused by a sports injury.

Knee preservation surgery

Knee preservation surgery is a procedure to repair and restore your knee joint without resorting to a replacement. It’s an option for younger patients or people with joint damage. If you have concerns or questions about knee trouble, get in touch and we can help.

Knee replacement surgery (total)

Total knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a specialist operation to replace your entire knee joint with artificial parts to relieve pain and increase your mobility.

The Process

Understanding the private healthcare journey
From the moment you step through the door, we want you to feel as comfortable and reassured as possible. One of the ways we can put you at ease is to let you know what to expect at each stage of your knee investigation and treatment process.

If you have any questions that aren't answered here or in the FAQs below, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Our team will be happy to help in any way they can.

01

Initial consultation

Most patients start by seeing their GP, a physiotherapist or osteopath. They may recommend simple pain relief or physical therapy. If symptoms don't improve, you'll usually be referred to a specialist for a more in-depth assessment of your knee.

02

Referral to a specialist

When conservative treatment hasn't helped, your specialist will take time to understand your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle to build a clear picture of what's causing your pain or discomfort.

03

Tests and diagnosis

Your consultant will conduct a physical examination and recommend additional tests, such as an X-ray, MRI scan and occasionally blood tests. These help us make an accurate diagnosis so we can explain your condition and discuss the most suitable treatment options.

04

Treatment and follow-up

At HCA, we tailor every treatment plan to you. We offer non-surgical options, joint preservation procedures and knee replacements if needed. You'll receive expert care and ongoing support, including physiotherapy, to help you recover and return to everyday activities with confidence.

Locations

Where can I receive knee treatments?
You'll find our expert knee consultants based at leading hospitals across London, in Birmingham and Cheshire, giving you quick and easy access to specialist care close to home when you need it.

Knee care FAQs

Our knee consultants are based in many centres across the UK, including London, Birmingham and Cheshire. We perform surgical treatments at our leading London hospitals:
  • London Bridge Hospital
  • The Lister Hospital
  • The Princess Grace Hospital
  • The Wellington Hospital
We treat children at The Portland Hospital for Children, also in London, just south of Regent's Park. And our specialist knee and orthopaedic network extends to just south of Manchester, at The Wilmslow Hospital in Cheshire, and the West Midlands, at The Harborne Hospital.
Your specialist will investigate and evaluate your knee pain. We'll ask you a few questions to understand your issues and how each of your symptoms is affecting your life. We will also ask you to describe the pain you've felt, and we will assess the strength and mobility of your knee.

Imagery of your knee may be required, typically an MRI scan or X-ray. Once the images have been reviewed by a musculoskeletal radiologist, your consultant will give you a diagnosis and discuss treatment options with you.
For patients who self-fund their partial or total knee replacement surgery, we offer fixed-price packages. To help with budgeting and give you peace of mind before treatment, your consultant will advise you on whether you qualify for one or more of these options:
  • Standard partial knee replacement, including prosthesis
  • Robotic-assisted partial knee replacement or custom prosthesis
  • Standard total knee replacement including prosthesis
  • Robotic-assisted total knee replacement or custom prosthesis
To book your HCA UK appointment with one of our knee experts, you can call or book online using our consultant finder. Remember to have your referral letter to hand. If you have private medical insurance, you'll also need your membership number and authorisation code.

We'll confirm your appointment on the phone or online. If you have any special requests, we'll get back to you, either by telephone or email, within 24 hours.

Our patients' stories

When I met Mr Thompson for the first time, he was so reassuring, and he guided me through every step of the journey from then on. He also assured me that my ACL knee surgeries could be done over a period of time that made sense in terms of my recovery, so that I didn’t have to spend too much time away from work.
