Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon Mr Sam Gidwani is based at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London, where he specialises in disorders of the hand, wrist and forearm. Mr Gidwani frequently treats and manages injuries of musicians, professional and amateur athletes. Indeed, during the London 2012 Summer Olympics, he was one of the surgeons in charge of managing any hand and wrist injuries of the athletes. His key specialist areas of expertise include carpal tunnel syndrome, finger joint replacement, ganglion cyst removal, joint fusion (both hand and wrist), rheumatoid hand surgery, tendon repair of the hand, wrist arthroscopy, arthritis (both hand and wrist), Dupuytren’s contracture, hand deformaties, mallet finger, trigger finger, as well as general hand and wrist complaints.
In 2006, Mr Gidwani successfully completed his specialist training in orthopaedics and acheived his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma & Orthopaedics). He then went on to undertake two years of further training specialising specifically in the hand and wrist at leading centres including, the Pulvertaft Hand Centre at the Royal Derby Hospital, Oxford's Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and even further afield, at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. He culminated his training by achieving the British postgraduate Diploma in Hand Surgery. In 2009, Mr Gidwani embarked upon his consultant career at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and became the Clinical Lead of the Guy's Orthopaedic Department (2014-2017), one London's biggest and of the largest and busiest units.
In addition to his busy schedule as a clinician, Mr Gidwani shares a passion for education and training junior surgeons. He is co-founder and convener of the St Thomas’ Cadaveric Hand Trauma course and also devotes his time to serve on the British Hand Surgery Society’s Instructional Course Committee. Striving to keep abreast of the latest advancements and broaden his knowledge and skills in the field, Mr Gidwani often attends national and international conferences, either as or as a member of faculty. When it comes to research, his key interests lie in the treatment of scaphoid fractures and the use of joint replacement in the hand and wrist.
