Dr Kalpesh Vaghela is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon currently seeing patients at Barts Health NHS Trust. He is passionate about helping patients suffering from pain and disability caused by hand and wrist conditions. He has expertise in all aspects of hand surgery including WALANT (Wide-Awake Local Anaesthetic No Tourniquet), complex trauma, microsurgery, arthroscopy (keyhole) and small joint arthroplasty.
Dr Vaghela completed his medical degree at Imperial College London in 2010 and completed a BSc in Surgical Sciences graduating with 1st class honours. He completed specialist orthopaedic training on the Percivall Pott rotation. Dr Vaghela then undertook the Training Interface Group (TIG) integrated orthoplastics hand surgery fellowship at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre, Derby and gained international experience at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia. Returning to the UK he spent time as a consultant at Guys & St Thomas Hospital Hand unit.
He has been awarded the BSSH Travelling fellowship attending the Institute Kaplan in Barcelona, Spain and the ASSH International Fellowship to attend centres of excellence in the USA including Hospital for Special Surgery & Montefiore-Einstein (New York), Vanderbilt Health (Nashville), Mayo Clinic (Rochester) and Duke University (Durham), learning from some of the worlds pioneering surgeons.
Dr Vaghela has obtained dual diploma qualification in hand surgery completing both the European and British diplomas, the latter of which he was awarded the Vivien Lees Gold Medal for best performance and now serves as a BSSH diploma tutor training future hand surgeons. Dr Vaghela enjoys teaching and mentoring and has completed a MSc in Medical Education at UCL and was awarded the Robert Jones Medal & Association Prize by the British Orthopaedic Association for his work on human factors training and virtual reality simulation. He currently sits on the BSSH Education & Training Committee and is a UKITE examiner.
He is actively involved in basic science and clinical research which has been published in peer-reviewed journals, specialist textbooks and presented at international conferences. Dr Vaghela works within a multi-disciplinary team, utilising evidence-based treatments to deliver high quality, patient centred care.
