After having worked as a locum Consultant at Mayday Hospital for two years, Dr Gupta was appointed as a substantive Consultant in May 2008. Dr Gupta was appointed as Training Lead for endoscopy later that year. The endoscopy unit at Mayday University Hospital was accredited by JAG and his role as training lead was commended. He has since relinquished that role. He has been actively involved in developing policies and protocols in Gastroenterology including developing shared care pathways between primary and secondary care. He was one of the Consultants in the Clostridium difficile management team that successfully reduced the infection rates at Mayday Hospital.
Dr Sanjay Gupta was part of the on-call rota for Medicine at Croydon University Hospital till 2020 and is on a rota covering gastroenterology patients and specialist gastroenterology referrals at the hospital. He was also the joint lead for the enteral nutrition team as part of Nutrition Support Team at Croydon Hospital. This was recognised by being short listed for the BMA Annual awards.
Dr Gupta has experience in managing various gastrointestinal and liver disorders. He is an accomplished endoscopist and performs upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures-both diagnostic and therapeutic. This includes ERCPs, oesophageal /pyloric dilatation and stenting, insertion of nasojejunal and nasogastric tubes, PEG insertion and polypectomies, BRAVO pH study and oesophageal manometry, wireless capsule endoscopies, flexible sigmoidoscopy, push enteroscopy.
Since relinquishing his role as training lead for endoscopy he took over as the lead for Upper GI and Hepatobiliary cancer and Acute Upper GI Bleed. He has since relinquished the latter role but continues to be the cancer lead since 2012. He was the joint lead for Cancer at Croydon University Hospital which he relinquished post Covid. He has been the lead for ERCP services for Croydon University Hospital for more than 10 years and has been leading the Barrett's oesophagus services since 2016.
