Dr Oscar Duke
Bedside Manners podcast

This is a podcast about what happens when life and medicine collide – and how people overcome, adapt and thrive in the face of life’s health challenges. Each week, Dr Oscar Duke (GP on BBC Morning Live and author of How to Be a Dad) is joined by a guest who opens up about the challenges they’ve faced with their health – from chronic conditions and everyday health hurdles to life-altering surgeries – and how those experiences shaped their life’s achievements and path to success.

Guests will also be discussing some of the incredible and surprising bedside manners that they’ve encountered along the way. Bringing burning questions about their conditions, we’ll bust myths, addressing a variety of healthcare topics across a range of specialties for every person at every age, outside of the consulting room.

Why rely on the opinion of one doctor when a world of super-specialists awaits?

Partnering with Pixiu and Dr Oscar, this podcast will allow the celebrity to discuss the complaint that’s brought them there, the effect of their condition on their life, and the questions they’ve always wanted answered.

Episode 1

Miriam Margolyes on aging, onions and matters of the heart

BAFTA-winning actress Miriam Margolyes joins Dr Oscar Duke for the first appointment of the Bedside Manners podcast. Describing a childhood growing up as the daughter of a GP, Miriam shares how passing wind and earwax were common dinner-time topics. But as someone who has reached a considerable level of fame and following in later life, staying fit and healthy has taken on a new meaning as she describes enduring knee replacement surgery and the TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) procedure on her heart.

Professor Michael Fertleman from HCA Healthcare UK (a specialist in geriatric medicine and orthopaedic rehabilitation) also joins Oscar to discuss the intricacies of elderly care, the risks and benefits of surgeries for older adults, and the future of care enhanced by technology.
