Dermatology at HCA UK

Why choose us?
Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it plays a crucial role in your overall health and wellbeing. It can also be an early warning system for other underlying conditions. Our dedicated, expert dermatology consultants treat thousands of patients every year. They specialise in a range of medical skin concerns from eczema through to skin cancer, and they can also help with cosmetic skin issues too.

At HCA UK, you’ll receive personalised, one-on-one dermatology care, and our teams will always be on hand to discuss your treatment plan and answer any questions or concerns.
Dermatology is a branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions that can affect your skin, your hair, your nails and your mucous membranes.

Dermatologists are specifically trained in the specialist treatment of a wide range of conditions, and may use medication, phototherapy (UV light), surgery or other treatments to help you.
Our experienced dermatologists diagnose and treat a full range of skin problems such as acne and infections, as well as inflammatory skin diseases like rosacea, eczema and psoriasis.  Sometimes allergies to skin or laundry products or other external allergens can also cause skin problems. Our experts can help you work out what’s causing the issue and start treatment.

We also provide comprehensive skin and mole evaluations and remove benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions, including warts, seborrheic keratoses and skin tags. If you’re worried about skin cancer, our experienced dermatologists can assess you. Should you receive a diagnosis, our multidisciplinary teams of dermatologists, plastic surgeons, pathologists and oncologists can treat everything from basal cell carcinoma (BCC) to malignant melanoma.

Our cosmetic dermatology teams can also improve the appearance of any blemishes, scars or age-related skin problems using techniques such as laser treatment, injections and chemical peels and medicated skincare.

Our dermatology consultants have extensive experience in treating a range of skin conditions in adults and children, and every patient is different.

But these are some of the common reasons why you might want to see a dermatologist:

  • If you have an ongoing inflammatory skin condition such as eczema, rosacea or psoriasis that isn’t responding to over-the-counter treatments, or is getting worse
  • If you notice any changes to your skin such as rashes, a mole that’s changing size or shape, or if you notice any new growths
  • If you think your skin may be infected, or you’re seeing pus or yellow scabs
  • If your skin in causing you significant discomfort or pain that’s disrupting your sleep or daily life
  • If you have scars, blemishes or other marks on your skin that you’d like to remove for cosmetic reasons

Even if you’re not experiencing any symptoms or issues with your skin, it can be a good idea to have it checked out once a year to screen for skin cancer, particularly if you have a family history of the condition.

Dermatology FAQ

You can usually book an appointment for a test in as little as 24 hours and get any results within 48 hours.
No. You can book an appointment with a dermatologist directly without a referral, but your insurer will need to see a referral before they cover the cost of any treatment. You can get a referral from your own GP or book a private GP appointment directly with us.
Your dermatologist will talk to you in detail about your personal medical history and your family’s medical history too. They’ll ask you about any symptoms you’re experiencing, and they’ll carry out a thorough physical investigation of your skin and any affected areas. They might also use medical instruments to look at specific areas of your skin more closely.

If your consultant identifies any issues that need investigation or treatment, they might recommend some further tests or prescribe medication.
If you already have a referral from a GP, you can call and make a direct appointment with one of our dermatology consultants, and you should be seen in as little as 24 hours.

You can also see one of our private GPs to get a referral before making an appointment with a dermatologist.
Yes, you can. Although many skin conditions will require a face-to-face appointment at some stage, our dermatology experts can talk to you online. This can work well for initial consultations or to follow up on treatment and management.
At HCA UK, we work with most of the UK’s major medical insurers. Dermatology treatment is often covered by medical insurance, but it’s very important that you check with your own insurance company to see if you’re covered and discuss any potential costs, particularly when it comes to cosmetic treatments.
Every patient’s condition is different, and dermatology treatments can range from simple treatments such as skin creams though to complex surgical procedures. Your consultant and the team at HCA UK will be able to talk you through the exact costs for any diagnosis and treatment you need.

Skin cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK. Here, two skin cancer patients; Carol and Pinja, who were both diagnosed with early-stage malignant melanoma last year, share their experiences under the care of Professor Ramia Mokbel, Consultant Dermatologist at The Harley Street Clinic.
