FAQ

We’re happy to treat most mothers with an early pregnancy between 5 and 16 weeks, including anyone who is 18 years or older who also has:
  • A positive urine pregnancy test with bleeding and/or pain
  • Bleeding after a recent pregnancy if retained products of conception (RPOC), be that foetal or placental tissue, are still suspected to be present
  • A loss of pregnancy symptoms
  • A previous history of early pregnancy loss or recurrent losses
  • A previous history of ectopic pregnancy
  • A previous history of molar pregnancy
  • Uncertainty about gestation dates

Due to the time-sensitive and sometimes critical nature of the care we offer, we need to stay focussed to be effective.

That means we don’t treat women at this unit who are:

  • Under 5 weeks or over 16 weeks pregnant
  • Under 18 years old
  • Haemodynamically unstable
  • Not pregnant and presenting with pelvic pain and/ or abnormal bleeding
  • Presenting with a recent history of a negative pregnancy test
  • Not independently mobile
If this includes you, please rest assured that we are more than happy to help through our obstetrics unit at the Portland Hospital. Just get in touch, our expert teams are here for you.
We offer our outpatient service within The Portland Hospital’s normal operating hours, which are 8.00 am to 8.00 pm, Monday to Friday and  8.00 am to 2.00 pm, Saturday.

Your safety is our top priority, so for any emergency taking place outside these hours, please call 999. You can always be transferred from NHS care to us, once you are stable and being safely and expertly looked after.

The care that the Early Pregnancy Unit offers doesn’t end with treatment. Our specialists will support you beyond with comprehensive follow-up care including pregnancy complications counselling, should you need it.

If advice and support from another specialist would help, we can also provide onward referrals into the incredible HCA Healthcare UK network such as to some of the country’s leading fertility specialists at Lister Fertility Clinic.
Yes, as the UK’s only hospital dedicated to the care of women and children, we want you to have the best possible experience before, during and after the birth of your child.
