Private cardiac treatments

Comprehensive, caring cardiology treatment

With decades of expertise, a wealth of experience and the very latest technologies and techniques, we’re able to offer a wide range of private cardiology treatments at our five specialist cardiac hospitals in London and Birmingham. You’ll get the rapid, accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment you need at every stage. These are some of the most common cardiology treatments we perform, and you can find more treatments detailed in the FAQ section below:

Cardiac catheter ablation

A cardiac ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). You may be referred for this treatment if abnormal heart rhythms are interfering with your quality of life.

Radiofrequency (RF) ablation

Radiofrequency ablation, or RF ablation, is a nonsurgical procedure used to treat conditions affecting the body's neurological and cardiac systems – from chronic pain to irregular heart rhythm.

Endoscopic cardiac surgery

Less invasive, minimal access surgical technique for mitral and aortic valves, it can be an alternative for open heart surgery (sternotomy). The technique provides more options for patients and can help them achieve a better quality of life more quickly, along with less pain and scarring.

Heart bypass surgery (CABG)

Heart bypass surgery is a treatment for coronary heart disease. The coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedure helps to restore blood flow to the heart where arteries have become blocked, a condition which can result in pain in the chest or more serious cardiovascular complications.

TAVI

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure that’s used as an alternative to open-heart surgery for patients who have aortic stenosis. It involves replacing the aortic valve in the heart.

Personalised external aortic root support (PEARS)

A surgical procedure to repair an aorta root affected by Marfan Syndrome

Heart stent surgery

A stent is a small, expandable metal mesh tube that can be inserted into narrowed arteries to restore blood flow. This is usually done to treat coronary artery disease (CAD) caused by the build-up of fatty plaque.

Electrical cardioversion

At HCA UK, we offer cardioversion as a treatment for arrhythmia. This quick and effective treatment uses a carefully controlled electrical shock or medication to correct an irregular heart rhythm.

Heart valve surgery

A surgical procedure to correct heart valve problems by either repairing a damaged valve or replacing it with a new valve.

Coronary angioplasty

A non-surgical treatment to widen arteries in the heart that have become narrow or blocked by plaque. You may see a coronary angioplasty referred to as “Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)”.

Pacemakers and defibrillators

If you need a pacemaker or defibrillator to help regulate your heart’s rhythm, our leading cardiologists and specialist teams can rapidly diagnose and treat your condition in state-of-the-art cardiac facilities.

Cardiac resynchronisation therapy

Cardiac resynchronisation therapy is a proven way to manage heart failure. Delivered by our leading cardiac specialists, this treatment helps your heart beat more efficiently and relieves day-to-day symptoms.

Understanding your heart treatment journey

What to expect
You may be experiencing heart symptoms for the first time or be managing an ongoing condition that requires regular treatment. Whatever your needs, we’ll make sure you know exactly what’s happening and are supported throughout the process.

Cardiology treatments can cover everything from lifestyle changes through to major surgery. Your specific treatment will be precisely tailored to your condition, but this will give you a good idea of what to expect. Our teams will always be here to explain everything in person too, so if you have any questions, we’ll be happy to help.

01

Initial consultation

You might be referred by your GP or one of our GPs here at HCA UK, or you can self-refer by calling our cardiac referral line on 020 7616 4988. However you come to us, we’ll get you booked in quickly to see one of our consultant cardiologists.

You can talk to your consultant about your symptoms, and they’ll carry out a thorough physical assessment. They’ll ask you about your medical and family history, your overall health and any diagnosis you may already have received, before recommending any scans or tests.

02

Tests and scans

Your specialist may arrange for you to have several tests and scans to help accurately diagnose your condition. Some of these may happen on the day of your first consultation and can include:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to check your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity
  • Echocardiogram (ECHO) to look at the structure of your heart and valves and assess how well it functions and pumps
  • A 24-hour tape and exercise test, which will be reviewed with the most appropriate specialist

03

Results and diagnosis

We know that waiting is worrying, so you’ll get your test results back within 48 hours. Then you’ll have a follow-up consultation with your cardiologist, who’ll talk you through the findings in detail, and give you a precise diagnosis.

04

Cardiology treatment

There’s a wide range of cardiac conditions, and ways to treat them. Your consultant will discuss your unique circumstances and the potential cardiac treatment options in detail. Those might range from relatively simple steps such as lifestyle changes or ongoing monitoring, through to medication or surgery.

You’ll be given ample time to ask questions, help to weigh up any risks and benefits, and your consultant will support you to make an informed decision about the best way to treat your condition.  If you need any further tests or specialist help, we can seamlessly arrange that within the extensive HCA network.

05

Follow-up and ongoing support

Our expert, caring teams will be available to help you with every aspect of your ongoing care and treatment, from monitoring or medication to managing your recovery from surgery. We’re here for you.

Cardiac treatment FAQ

We’re rated No.1 on the UK for private cardiac and thoracic care, and we successfully treated 32,000 patients in the last year alone. Our skilled, experienced and expert teams have access to the latest technologies and techniques, and we have five specialist cardiac hospitals within our network.
Your heart is a complex organ and can benefit from a huge range of treatments and interventions depending on your symptoms, your age and your medical history. The best way to determine the precise, tailored treatment option for you is to arrange an initial consultation with one of our expert cardiologists. They can get you on the path to an accurate diagnosis and a recommendation for treatment.

We have four specialist cardiac hospitals in London: The Harley Street Clinic, London Bridge Hospital, The Wellington Hospital and The Portland Hospital, which specialises in treating women and children. We also have The Harborne Hospital, our specialist cardiac hospital in Birmingham. They’re all expertly staffed and fully equipped to help you with cardiology treatments.

It’s very safe. Any surgery carries some risks, which your consultant will discuss with you in detail before your procedure, but we have a 99% success rate across the thousands of cardiac surgical procedures we carry out every year.

The cost of private heart surgery depends on the treatment you need, the complexity of your condition and where you receive care. Following your consultation, you'll receive a personalised treatment plan and a clear overview of expected costs.

Less invasive procedures may involve shorter hospital stays and recovery times, which can affect overall costs. More complex procedures often require longer surgery, a longer hospital stay and additional follow-up care. The cost will reflect the treatment and support you need.

At HCA UK, we offer a range of private cardiology treatments, including:

You can access private heart surgery through self-pay or private medical insurance. If you're paying for your own treatment, we'll explain the costs involved and answer any questions you may have.

Treatment for heart failure depends on the cause of your condition, your symptoms and how well your heart is functioning. Your consultant will recommend a personalised treatment plan to help manage symptoms and support your heart health.

Many people manage heart failure with medication, lifestyle changes and regular monitoring. If an underlying heart condition is contributing to your symptoms, further cardiology treatment may be needed.

This may include:

Treatment for heart valve disease depends on the affected valve, the severity of the condition and your symptoms. Some people only need regular monitoring, while others may benefit from medication and other cardiology treatments to help manage symptoms.

If treatment is needed, your consultant may recommend a procedure to repair or replace the valve. This may involve minimally invasive techniques, catheter-based procedures or heart valve surgery.
