ENT SERVICES

Expert diagnosis and treatment in Birmingham
When you come to The Harborne Hospital in Birmingham, you’ll have access to leading ENT consultants and the latest diagnostics and treatments – all under one roof. Our team offer the following treatments:

Perforated eardrum repair

We offer surgery to treat a hole in the eardrum that won’t heal on its own. This is to prevent repeated infections or hearing loss.

Cochlear implants

These innovative electronic devices can help restore hearing in patients who are profoundly deaf.

Ear reconstruction surgery

Whether your ear was lost or damaged in an accident, through disease, by an infected piercing or as a result of failed cosmetic surgery, our experts can help. They can reconstruct your ear by using either your own tissue or, if the tissue is severely damaged, by using a prosthetic ear.

Rhinoplasty

If you're unhappy with your nose - whether it's for cosmetic reasons or you've been injured - nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) could help. This surgical procedure can enhance, reduce or refine the shape and size of your nose so you feel more confident. It can also help with breathing problems.

Septorhinoplasty

This surgical procedure involves reshaping your nose and straightening the septum (nasal wall), which runs between your nostrils. It’s used for conditions such as a deviated septum, which can occur naturally, or from a trauma or sports injury.

Nasal polypectomy

This minimally invasive procedure removes nasal polyps (swellings on the lining of the nose).

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery

FESS is used to treat severe sinus problems. It’s only considered when other treatments, such as tablets and sprays, have been unsuccessful.

Balloon sinuplasty

Our ENT surgeons use this minimally invasive procedure to treat chronic sinusitis.

Grommets for glue ear

A grommet is a tiny plastic tube with a hole in the centre that is inserted into the eardrum to help with glue ear. Glue ear is a build-up of fluid behind the eardrum.

Laryngectomy

A laryngectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the larynx (voice box). There are two types of laryngectomy: partial and total.

Thyroid surgery

There are two main types of surgery: a total thyroidectomy (where your entire thyroid is removed) and near-total thyroidectomy (where a small amount of tissue is left).

Interventional sialography

A minimally invasive technique that is sued to help identify and correct the cause of salivary gland obstruction.

Vestibular rehabilitation

If your dizziness and balance problems are caused by a condition in the inner ear, then vestibular rehabilitation can help.

Your ENT treatment

What to expect
Whether you’re experiencing hearing loss, ear infections, nasal obstruction, sinus issues, a sore throat, voice changes, or neck lumps, our dedicated ENT team is here to help.

From the moment you step through the door at The Harborne, until you’re ready to leave, we want you to feel as comfortable as possible.

One of the ways we can put you at ease is to let you know what to expect at each stage of your ENT investigation and treatment process.

If you have any questions that aren’t answered here or in the FAQ section below, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our team will be happy to help in any way they can.

01

Initial consultation

Your first step will be meeting with one of our otolaryngologists (also known as an ENT consultant). We want our patients to feel in control of their healthcare from the beginning, and that starts with you choosing which expert you see at a time and date that suits you.

Your consultant will talk to you about your symptoms and ask about your medical history. Depending on your symptoms, they may also carry out an examination of your ears, nose or throat.

02

Tests and scans

During your consultation, your specialist will decide whether they want you to have any tests and scans, and they’ll discuss each of these with you. These will help your consultant find the cause of your symptoms and they can then make a diagnosis.

We offer a comprehensive range of ENT tests and scans at The Harborne, including hearing tests, nasendoscopy (to look inside your nose), balance tests, allergy testing, and CT and MRI scans.

03

Treatment

Once your consultant has received your test and scan results, they’ll meet with you again to discuss your treatment options.

Your treatment options will depend on your diagnosis. Common ENT treatments include medication, minor procedures that are carried out in the clinic, or surgery, such as a tonsillectomy, sinus surgery, grommets, or septorhinoplasty. You may be referred to a speech and language therapist.

04

Follow up and ongoing care

Depending on your treatment, you might need to see your consultant again. This is to check how you’re recovering after a procedure or surgery, or to see if your symptoms have improved if you were given medicine.
