Dr Wisam Alwan is a Consultant Dermatologist at St John’s Institute of Dermatology within Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, where he holds the role of Clinical Lead for Children’s Dermatology. His practice includes the diagnosis and management of dermatological conditions affecting both adults and paediatric patients. He treats inflammatory skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis, acne and rosacea, as well as a range of cutaneous infections. He also performs skin lesion assessment, mole evaluation and skin cancer surveillance.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr Alwan is involved in academic research with a focus on the skin microbiome and immune mediated skin disease. He completed a PhD at King’s College London investigating the role of commensal bacteria in inflammatory conditions including psoriasis and atopic eczema. His doctoral research was supported by the Medical Research Council, the British Association of Dermatologists and the British Skin Foundation. His work has been recognised with awards from the Royal Society of Medicine and the British Society for Investigative Dermatology.
Dr Alwan has participated in clinical research studies and has authored publications in peer reviewed journals, including Cell Host and Microbe and the British Journal of Dermatology. He is also engaged in postgraduate medical training, working as an educational supervisor and holding a formal qualification in clinical education.
