Having graduated from UCL Medical School in 2001, Dr Nirupa Murugaesu completed her general medical training in London. Dr Murugaesu subsequently trained in Medical Oncology at St Bartholomew's and University College London Hospitals and completed a PhD at The Institute of Cancer Research in 2011. Following which, Dr Murugaesu completed a Clinical Lectureship in The Translational Cancer Therapeutics Laboratory at University College London and The Francis Crick Institute. Dr Murugaesu is a Consultant in Medical Oncology at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Kings College London School of Medicine with a specialist interest in Colorectal Cancer and Precision Oncology.
Dr Murugaesu was appointed Principal Clinician for Cancer Genomics at Genomics England and Medical Lead in Cancer Genomics for the South East Genomic Laboratory Hub. These roles include clinical leadership to transform delivery of molecular testing in clinical cancer care and enhance research outputs. In the last five years, Dr Murugaesu has published in 41 peer-reviewed papers, including Lancet, Science, Nature, Cancer Discovery and New England Journal of Medicine and led the pan cancer analysis of the Cancer Programme of the 100,000 Genomes Project as senior, corresponding author.
