Mrs Karen Harrison-Phipps undertook an Engineering degree before completing her medical training at Southampton University Medical School. She went on to train in General Surgery, followed by specialist training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Harefield Hospital, King’s College Hospital, and Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals. In 2003, she was awarded the McCormack Medal for best performance in the National Cardiothoracic speciality examinations.
She completed the final year of her thoracic surgical training at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, one of the world’s largest thoracic surgical practices. During this period, Mrs Harrison-Phipps gained experience in advanced surgical management of lung cancer, mesothelioma, mediastinal tumours, pulmonary metastases resection, and complex thoracic cancers including chest wall resections. She also worked with cases involving highly complex thoracic conditions such as broncho-pleural fistulae and oesophageal leaks.
Mrs Harrison-Phipps subsequently completed further training at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, where she developed expertise in advanced minimally invasive thoracic surgical techniques. Her clinical practice covers thoracic surgery, lung cancers, mesothelioma, mediastinal tumours, and minimally invasive (VATS) surgery.
