Since 2001, Paul Halliwell has worked as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Surrey County NHS Trust in Guildford, while his private practice has been exclusively located in Surrey. Recently, he has joined the team of esteemed specialist orthopaedic surgeons at the Wellington HCA Hospital in London.
Paul's specialty lies in addressing foot and ankle issues in both children and adults. He has undergone Fellowship training in Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, which qualified him to treat children. In contrast, his Fellowship in Toronto focused on Trauma and Joint Reconstruction. After completing his South West Thames Higher Surgical Training Programme, he developed a particular interest in total ankle joint replacement (TAR) and has since become one of the few high-volume ankle replacement surgeons in the UK. As a Principal Investigator for the national TARVA ankle replacement study, he teaches the technique of TAR internationally.
Paul's clinical approach involves prioritizing the psychological aspect of medicine, with a keen interest in neuropsychology. He believes in treating patients as individuals and provides empathy and support at a human level. He directs and develops the British Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) national training course, is the Chair of BOFAS' Outcomes Committee, and coordinates the BOFAS Registry, a UK-wide online system for measuring the results of foot and ankle surgical treatments.
Outside of his work, Paul enjoys pursuing his passion for amateur dramatics, which he finds stimulating and relaxing. In particular, he enjoys Shakespeare and gritty non-musical dramas by writers such as Pinter, with his recent favorites being Henry V, the Homecoming, and Jekyll & Hyde.
