Mr Donald Whitaker is a highly experienced Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon specialising in adult cardiac and thoracic surgery. He graduated with an MB ChB from the University of Edinburgh in 1993 and has particular expertise in both elective and trauma-related cardiothoracic procedures.
Mr Whitaker completed his specialist surgical training on the South East London programme, gaining extensive experience at leading centres including King’s College Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals. He further enhanced his clinical skills through a year of fellowship training in Halifax, Canada.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Whitaker has a strong academic background. He was awarded an MD by the University of Edinburgh in 2006 for his research into neuropsychological outcomes following coronary artery bypass surgery, reflecting his commitment to improving patient quality of life.
His areas of expertise include heart bypass and coronary artery surgery, cardiothoracic trauma, and advanced thoracic techniques such as Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS). He also has specialist interests in internal rib fixation and the Ravitch repair for pectus excavatum.
Mr Whitaker is a member of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
