Mr Lawrence Okiror is a Consultant Thoracic and Robotic Surgeon practising at The Lister Hospital in Chelsea and London Bridge Hospital. He combines robotic surgery for lung cancer and lung nodules with a focus that sets him apart — the surgical and bronchoscopic treatment of advanced emphysema and COPD.
For advanced emphysema he offers both lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) and endobronchial valve therapy, with more than 100 such procedures since 2019. As the sole lung volume reduction surgeon at London Bridge Hospital, he works within an integrated COPD pathway: his nationally commissioned NHS emphysema service at Guy’s and St Thomas’ runs a monthly multidisciplinary meeting with respiratory physicians and the Harefield lung transplant team, so each patient is matched to the right treatment — and referring physicians get a clear answer on when severe breathlessness warrants a surgical lung volume reduction assessment.
In lung cancer he has performed more than 1,000 operations as a consultant, over four in five robotically or by minimally invasive techniques, within the Guy’s and St Thomas’ thoracic programme — the UK’s largest by volume. He uses robotic bronchoscopy (ION) to biopsy small or hard-to-reach nodules, and also treats hyperhidrosis and pleural conditions.
Mr Okiror is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh in Cardiothoracic Surgery, a Member of the RCSEd Surgical Specialty Board in Cardiothoracic Surgery and its representative to the College’s Robotic Surgery Taskforce, and examines for the UK Intercollegiate and European Boards of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
