Dr Elsie Mensah has extensive urological experience and was appointed as a substantive Consultant Urological Surgeon at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS foundation trust in 2020 where she is an integral part of the urothelial upper tract and bladder cancer team as well as the benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) team.
She graduated from Kings College London School of Medicine and Dentistry and undertook her higher surgical and urological training in Kent, Surrey and Sussex and London Deanery respectively. Her specialist training culminated with her final year at Guys and St Thomas’ following which she was appointed to a consultant position. She subspecialises in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), benign prostatic enlargement, and prostate cancer diagnostics. She currently serves as the urology tumour group lead for the South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA) where she works with SELCA to improve cancer care and outcomes across the network.
Within her non muscle invasive bladder cancer service, she has expertise in blue light cystoscopy, transurethral laser ablation as well as Trans Urethral Resection of bladder Tumour (TURBT), including fractionated and enbloc techniques.
She has significant experience in investigating blood in the urine, raised PSA and assessment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) as well as performing image guided transperineal prostate biopsies. Her benign prostatic enlargement surgical skills range from minimally invasive techniques such as REZUM steam ablation to Aquablation water jet therapy and Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HOLEP). She is well positioned to provide a well rounded service to patients, providing expert guidance based on clinical factors and individual patient treatment priorities.
Elsie Mensah is active in research and is currently the primary investigator at Guys and St Thomas’ for a research study investigating biomarkers in bladder cancer diagnostics. She is also passionate about educating the next generation of urologists and regularly delivers national and international workshops in BPH skills as well as bladder cancer.
She is a respected voice in British Urology and has delivered symposiums and chaired sessions at the annual British Association of urological Surgery conferences as well as the subspecialty BAUS endourology and BAUS oncology meetings. She has served on the council of the International British Urology Society (IBUS) as well as the governing body of UROLAP, a charitable organisation with which she has organised urological training workshops in West Africa.
