Dr Paul Sanghera is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at University Hospital Birmingham, where he has specialised in CNS and head and neck oncology since 2008. He also serves as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham’s College of Medical and Dental Sciences, contributing to the training and development of future clinicians and researchers.
A graduate of the University of Leeds Medical School, Dr Sanghera went on to obtain Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, 2001) and Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR, 2005). Soon after, he completed a prestigious Clinical Fellowship in Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto’s Odette Cancer Centre, where he trained under Dr Tsao, Dr Davey and Dr Sahgal with a focus on CNS and stereotactic radiation oncology.
Dr Sanghera has held numerous strategic, leadership and advisory roles regionally and nationally. He is the West Midlands NIHR Brain Tumour Research Lead and a current member of the NHSE SRS/SRT Commissioning Evaluation Group. Since 2011, he has been a longstanding member of the UK Proton Reference Panel, contributing expertise to the development of advanced radiotherapy services.
His previous leadership roles include Chair of the Brain and CNS Expert Advisory Group for the West Midlands (2021–2024), Chair of the Neuro‑oncology MDT at UHB (2018–2022), and Chair of the Radiosurgery MDT (2013–2020). Nationally, he has contributed to the Royal College of Radiologists through positions on the Professional Standards Board and as a member of the FRCR Part II examination writing group. He has also held key roles within the National Cancer Research Institute, serving on the Brain Clinical Studies Group across two terms and leading its Brain Metastases/Meningioma subgroup.
At University Hospital Birmingham, Dr Sanghera has been instrumental in the evolution of radiotherapy services, notably through his tenure as Clinical Lead for Radiotherapy (2013–2018) and earlier as Chair of the IMRT Implementation Group (2009–2013). He has also participated in national cancer peer review processes, including for skull base services and overseas proton therapy provision.
