Dr Lorenzo Masci is a Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine based at ISEH. He practises a holistic approach to the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal conditions, covering a wide spectrum of medical and musculoskeletal problems related to physical activity. As most musculoskeletal conditions do not require surgery, his work focuses on conservative management strategies aimed at restoring function and enabling return to activity.
Dr Masci has internationally recognised expertise in upper and lower limb tendinopathy, including Achilles and patellar tendinopathy, tennis elbow, hamstring tendon disorders, and hip and groin pain. He also specialises in diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound-guided interventions, allowing clinical assessment, imaging and targeted treatments to be delivered within a single consultation, providing a one-stop clinic model. His clinical practice includes ultrasound-guided joint and tendon injections, cortisone injections, hyaluronic acid injections, platelet-rich plasma injections, and the management of complex tendon and soft tissue conditions.
He has extensive experience working in elite sport and has previously served as Lead Sports Medicine Doctor for Wasps Rugby between 2011 and 2017, Fulham Football Club from 2008 to 2010, and Melbourne Storm Rugby League from 2005 to 2007. Earlier in his career, he worked with Tennis Australia and the Australian Open between 2001 and 2007 and was Medical Lead for the Aquatics Centre at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Dr Masci is actively involved in research and has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications. He regularly speaks at international sports medicine conferences, including meetings hosted by Arsenal Football Club, Barcelona Football Club and the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine. His current research focuses on tendon pathology and is conducted in collaboration with institutions including the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Imperial College, Queen Mary University and Brunel University. He holds an honorary lectureship at Queen Mary University of London, has developed an online musculoskeletal ultrasound-guided education programme, and is involved in teaching Sports and Exercise Medicine graduates at University College London. His professional qualifications include MBBS with honours, Fellowship of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians, Fellowship of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (UK), and a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine research from the University of Melbourne.
