Athanasios Diamantopoulos, also known as Thanos Diamantopoulos, is a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at King’s College London. He qualified in medicine in 2004 from the University of Patras, Greece, and holds a PhD focused on the experimental prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy.
Dr Diamantopoulos has comprehensive training across all aspects of general and interventional radiology and completed a specialist fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ prior to his appointment as a consultant at the same institution. He is board certified by the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) and currently serves as the Clinical Lead for Interventional Radiology at Guy’s and St Thomas’, where he plays a key role in service development, clinical governance, and innovation.
He has an extensive academic and research portfolio, having authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters. Dr Diamantopoulos is a regular speaker at national and international conferences and is frequently invited to lecture on advances in interventional radiology. He acts as both principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple research studies and, in recognition of his contribution to the field, has been awarded a Fellowship of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (FCIRSE). Since 2019, he has served as an elected member of the CIRSE Research Committee.
Clinically, Dr Diamantopoulos specialises in minimally invasive, image-guided vascular and non-vascular procedures, as well as interventional oncology, treating both adult and paediatric patients. He is known for delivering cutting-edge interventional care and routinely incorporates the latest technological advances into his practice, including drug-eluting technologies, carbon dioxide angiography, advanced atherectomy techniques, and the newest ablation therapies. His approach combines technical excellence with innovation to achieve optimal outcomes while minimising risk and recovery time for patients.
