Mr Balmforth is a highly skilled consultant cardiac surgeon with a special interest in complex aortic surgery. He currently works at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where he is the lead for aortic surgery.
Mr Balmforth obtained his Bachelor or Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Imperial College London where he was awarded the prestigious Faculty of Medicine Prize in his final examinations. He completed his surgical training at distinguished centres accross london including Guy's Hospital, St George's Hospital, The Royal Brompton Hospital and St Bartholomew's Hospital. Following his training, Mr Balmforth completed the prestigious aortic fellowship at St Bartholomew's Hospital London. He performs the full range of adult cardiac surgical procedures with a specialist interest in surgery to the thoracic aorta, aortic valve surgery, and coronary bypass surgery.
Mr Balmforth has a strong academic interest and in 2020 was awarded a PhD in cardiovascular medicine from Queen Mary University of London. His research on cellular senescence and acute kidney injury in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass was awarded the Ronald Edwards Medal by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland. He has presented widely at international conferences and holds memberships to both the Royal College of Surgeons, and the Royal College of Physicians.
