Mr Conal Austin is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, with private practice at London Bridge Hospital. His clinical work spans paediatric, neonatal, infant and adult congenital cardiac surgery, with particular expertise in congenital heart conditions and complex reconstructive procedures.
He has specialist experience in conservative paediatric vascular repairs, minimal access paediatric cardiac surgery, and the use of intra-operative three-dimensional echocardiography to support surgical precision. Mr Austin also has a focused interest in PEARS (Personalised External Aortic Root Support) for selected patients with aortic root disease.
Mr Austin performs a broad range of cardiothoracic procedures, including paediatric cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery, coronary artery surgery, valve repair and replacement, repair of atrial septal defects, total arterial revascularisation, and mitral valve repair. He also has expertise in the surgical management of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.
He obtained his primary medical qualification from Belfast University in 1986 and completed formal cardiothoracic training in 1995. His advanced surgical training includes placements at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and Hôpital Broussais in Paris, where he further developed his experience in congenital and paediatric cardiac surgery.
Mr Austin continues to practise across both NHS and private settings, providing specialised surgical care for children and adults with congenital and acquired cardiothoracic conditions.
