Achilles tendon injury
This occurs when there is a tear or separation of the tendon fibres. It is relatively common and can be serious, often requiring surgical repair.
Ankle arthritis
This is where the shock absorbing cartilage of the joint is worn, causing pain and a lack of mobility. Surgery may be required once all non-surgical routes have been exhausted.

Ligament injuries to the ankle including soft tissue damage.

Initial consultation
Whether you’ve self-referred or have a referral from your GP, the first step is always an initial consultation with one of our foot and ankle specialists.
At this appointment, your consultant will ask about your medical history, carry out a physical examination of your foot or ankle, and arrange any necessary tests and scans.

Tests and scans
At HCA UK, you’ll have access to the UK’s most comprehensive private diagnostics network. All our tests and scans are carried out in our facilities by our expert teams.
Your consultant may request a blood test and refer you to have an ultrasound scan, X-ray, MRI or CT scan. The scan will let your consultant view your foot or ankle in more detail.

Follow-up appointment
You’ll meet with your consultant, who’ll discuss your test and scan results with you and share their diagnosis. They’ll decide whether a non-surgical approach, minimally invasive surgery or joint replacement surgery is the best treatment option for you, depending on your condition and symptoms. If you have any concerns or questions, your consultant will be happy to discuss them.

After surgery
If you do need surgery, you’ll also be monitored afterwards by our clinical nursing team and helped in your recovery by our highly skilled physiotherapists.

Pain in the foot or ankle can be caused by soft tissue injuries, such as sprains or strains, congenital defects, such as flat feet or club foot, arthritis or trauma (such as a fracture). Poorly fitting shoes can also cause pain and discomfort.
It depends on your condition or injury. As part of our first-class diagnosis and treatment service, we can offer ultrasound, X-ray, MRI and standing CT scanning to patients with foot and ankle problems.
Yes, we see many children and teenagers at our dedicated site, The Portland Hospital in London. For children and young people with congenital defects such as club foot and flat feet, our paediatric teams offer corrective procedures such as the highly specialised Ponseti treatment.
If you need surgical treatment, this will be at one of our leading private hospitals. In London, you can choose from London Bridge Hospital, The Wellington Hospital in north London, The Princess Grace Hospital in central London, or The Lister Hospital in Chelsea.
