About wrist pain

Any pain, discomfort or restricted movement in your wrist can have a major impact on day-to-day life. This may be the result of an injury, such as a fall, or wear and tear that worsens over time. Our hand and wrist specialists are here to help diagnose a wide range of injuries and conditions, and offer the best treatment options for you.

Need to know

The symptoms you experience depend on exactly the type of injury or condition you have.

These symptoms may signify a fracture:

  • Sharp and instant pain
  • lack of movement
  • a cracking sound at the time of injury

These symptoms may be more associated with arthritis:

  • Stiffness
  • swelling
  • a feeling of warmth

A sensation of numbness or tingling may point towards tendonitis, a repetitive strain injury or carpal tunnel syndrome. You could also have tenderness, swelling and restricted movement from strains or sprains. However, it's important that you speak to a GP or consultant, so that they can discuss your symptoms, your usual routines and treatment options with you.

After talking about your wrist pain, when it started and how severe it is, your consultant will carry out a physical examination then let you know what the next steps are.

It is most likely this will involve one or more screening techniques such as an X-ray or MRI scan. Certain possible causes of wrist pain may require further assessments. Your consultant can discuss these with you at the time.

Our hand and wrist specialists are able to offer a number of surgical and non-surgical treatments. Which they recommend will depend on your specific condition and the extent of any damage. Your consultant will discuss this with you.

Our service extends across many disciplines to ensure you have the best possible treatment. So as well as medical and surgical care, we can offer specialist hand physiotherapy and occupational therapy to help your recovery and rehabilitation.
