About measuring for biomarker
A heart attack causes special proteins to leak into your blood. One of these proteins is called ST2.
Measuring the level of this cardiac biomarker in your blood can indicate where, and to what degree, the heart is damaged.
Identifying this damage can help determine how you are responding to treatment.
Need to know
Your consultant will take a sample of your blood from your arm using a very thin needle. You may feel a slight prick as the needle goes in, but the procedure is otherwise painless. It takes less than a minute to take the small amount of blood required. A small piece of cotton wool and a plaster may be applied to the area where the needle entered your arm.
No special preparation is required, but you may want to wear a short sleeved shirt or top.
You'll be able to leave the hospital and resume your normal activities immediately following the procedure. Your consultant will contact you once the results of your blood test are available.
