Vertebrectomy
CORPECTOMY
Our spine surgeons specialise in vertebrectomy, which is a surgical procedure to remove all of the vertebral body
What is a vertebrectomy?
A vertebrectomy is a procedure to remove all of the vertebral body, an oval-shaped segment of bone making up the front of the vertebra.
It's normally carried out if spinal disc disease or damage has spread into the bones on either side of the disc itself.
Need to know
A vertebrectomy is a surgical procedure carried out under general anaesthetic. Your HCA UK surgeon will start removing your vertebral body using surgical instruments. They'll then fill the void with a cage-like structure, which will help to support your spine and encourage your bones to fuse naturally.
Before your vertebrectomy, you'll most likely be asked to attend a pre-assessment appointment at a date prior to it. At this appointment, you'll meet with a nurse specialist. They will explain how to prepare for the procedure. You'll be asked to limit your food and drink intake in the hours leading up to your vertebrectomy.
After your vertebrectomy, you'll be taken to our recovery ward, where our dedicated staff will care for you. Once you have recovered from the anaesthetic you will go back to your room. You may be asked to stay in hospital for two to three days to recover fully. Your consultant or nurse specialist will explain when you can leave the hospital and get back to your usual routine.
