Improving or reducing the appearance of a scar

If you have a scar caused by an injury or a previous surgery, revision treatment can minimise the appearance of old and new scar tissue – including keloid scars and facial Scar revision aims to improve the texture and size of scars, as well as reducing the itch sensation.

No specialist can ever guarantee to make your scar go away, and there are a wide range of different treatments available. Scars may require different treatments depending on their maturity, size and location of the scar.

Some types of scars, such as keloid scars, can worsen with surgery. However techniques are improving all the time and technology that freezes keloid scars from the inside is becoming more available. Your consultant will discuss your scar with you at your initial consultation and will recommend the next steps and possible treatments for you.

What treatment options are available?

Treatment options can range from surgery to steroid injections or laser therapy. Almost all procedures are done under local anaesthetic, to numb the area and block pain during treatment.

Surgery
The aim of surgery is to remove excess or raised scar tissue. Sometimes, surgery can also reposition the scar so it heals in a less visible way by following the natural contours of your skin. Surgical management can also be used to release contractures – scar tissue that pulls or restricts the surrounding skin.

Laser therapy or corticosteroid injections
These treatments can be used to flatten scar tissue or reduce and soften the appearance of some keloid and hypertrophic scars.

Your consultant will examine your scar and recommend the most suitable treatment option for you, based on its size and location. They'll explain your option and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the procedure you're having, your consultant will let you know how to prepare. This might include avoiding alcohol or blood-thinning mediation, such as aspirin, before treatment. Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you.

In most cases you should be able to go home right after your appointment. If you've had stitches, your consultant will let you know when they should be removed, and advise of the need for any follow-up appointments. The area treated may be swollen or painful for a few days after treatment. You will be given guidance on how to care for the area while it heals.

It can take several months for scar tissue to settle and the results of your treatment to be fully visible.
