Pavlik harness treatment
Babies are treated with a Pavlik harness by our paediatric experts to stabilise their hips and aid normal development. Sometimes the hip joint (a ball and socket joint) doesn't form properly in babies and is referred to as hip dysplasia, otherwise known as a dislocation of the hip.
What is Pavlik harness treatment?
If your baby experiences developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), they can wear a Pavlik harness that strengthens their ligaments around the hip joint.
This is a fabric splint that secures their hips in a strong position, helping to promote natural movement.
Your baby's consultant paediatrician can adjust this harness with each visit. They will also advise on how you can assist with their rehabilitation.
Need to know
Your baby's consultant will place them in the harness. They will discuss the different ways in which you can care for your baby during this time.
Relevant information may include:
- Changing clothes and nappies
- Cleaning the harness
- Recommended sleeping position
- How to avoid skin irritation
The brace should be worn constantly for one to two months. Its position may be adjusted on each hospital visit. You will be advised on gradually removing the harness. This can help your baby move more freely, until it can be removed permanently.
