Endoscopic mucosal resection is a treatment used to remove precancerous or cancerous cells in the oesophagus or stomach
What is a mucosal resection?
EMR is an endoscopic procedure on the lining of the oesophagus (food pipe) or stomach.
It is sometimes carried out to remove precancerous or early stage cancerous growths in this area.

Need to know
The procedure can be carried out under deep sedation or general anaesthetic. Your consultant surgeon may then do the following:
- Once you are asleep or sedated, an endoscope (small tube with a camera on the end) will be passed down your throat.
- A fluid is injected around the cancerous cells using the endoscope.
This area will then be more visible compared to other tissue cells. Your consultant will remove the damaged tissue by EMR, which usually involves a small rubber band being placed over the area before removal with an electrified wire. The procedure normally lasts around 30 minutes.

Your consultant will explain the procedure and answer any questions you might have. In order to prepare you may be asked to:
- Provide your consultant with detailed information on your medical history. This can include previous surgeries, other conditions you might have and any medication you are taking.
- Follow advice on food and drink intake prior to the procedure.

Immediately after EMR you will remain in hospital until the anaesthetic has worn off. When your consultant is satisfied you will be allowed to go home.
It is likely they will recommend you avoid certain activities like driving for at least 24 hours. You may experience slight side effects as a result of sedation. This can include nausea, tiredness and/or a sore throat.
Your consultant will arrange a follow-up appointment with you as part of your recovery process.
