LAPAROSCOPIC WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY
Our experienced bariatric surgeons specialise in minimally-invasive weight-loss surgery, like duodenal switch, a modified form of a gastric bypass
Obesity can put you at risk of serious conditions, like diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer. If you're 18 and over and your BMI (body mass index) is higher than 40 (or higher than 35 and you have two serious conditions), your GP or consultant may recommend a laparoscopic duodenal switch to help you lose weight.
This surgical procedure removes 70% of your stomach. By doing so, it restricts the amount of food you can store in your stomach and reduces the amount of calories your body absorbs. As a result, you could see a significant decrease in your weight.
The operation is done under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will make small, keyhole-size cuts in your abdomen. They'll then use tiny surgical instruments and a special operating telescope to reduce the size of your stomach.
Your surgeon will also use the small intestine to create two pathways to leave you feeling fuller after eating less food and reduce the time needed by your body to capture calories and fat. At the end of the procedure, they'll close the small cuts with stitches.
Your consultant will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have. They'll also let you know how to prepare and if you need to take any special dietary measures before surgery.
Because you'll be having a general anaesthetic, they'll let you know how long you should avoid eating and drinking beforehand. Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you.
After your procedure, we'll transfer you to our recovery area. The procedure is quite a complex one, so you may have to stay with us for a few days after your surgery.
Your consultant will let you know when you can leave and get back to your normal routine. They'll also explain your dietary restrictions, including if and for how long you should stick to a particular diet.
