We create a safe bridge between hospital and home, with nursing care focussed on giving you back independence and personalised plans to ensure your safe discharge.

Many of our patients have undergone an operation, although our rehabilitation programme can benefit anyone seeking extra recovery support following a hospital stay.
This comprehensive programme includes everything you need to make a safe and speedy recovery as well as a smooth return home:
  • Daily physiotherapy
  • Daily occupational therapy
  • Hydrotherapy pool sessions
  • 24/7 nursing care
  • En-suite accommodation
  • Catering
  • Assistance with discharge planning
  • Onward referral to local rehab services
No two recoveries are the same. Your individual recovery journey will be supported by a multidisciplinary team and geared to your return home, including helping you to:
  • Increase strength in weakened muscles

  • Restore movement patterns
  • Reduce pain or swelling
  • Practice daily activities

Your team will have an in-depth understanding of the procedure you’ve had and your condition. This will help them to build a truly personalised treatment plan and ensure that you receive the maximum benefit from each therapy session.

They’ll also be able to closely monitor you during your therapy, identifying your areas of discomfort and setting realistic and safe expectations for when you return home.

REHABILITATION AFTER SURGERY

What to expect
A little extra time and care as you recover can make all the difference and that’s what this programme is designed to give you.

We want you to feel confident and safe to return home, so our approach is carefully focussed on giving you back independence.

01

Initial assessment

On day one, you’ll complete an assessment with your designated therapy team. They’ll explain your clinical journey and surgery outcomes and look at how your recovery is going so far alongside pinpointing any areas that you need to strengthen. They’ll also factor postoperative guidelines into your plan, for example any particular movements that it would be best to avoid in the short term.

02

Setting goals for progress

As this will be early in your recovery, your therapy will be appropriate for your stage of recovery and take into account any swelling or acute pain you may experience following surgery.

Together, your specialist team will set goals for your programme and define your daily progress markers. They’ll also measure your strength, flexibility and functional progress throughout the week and ensure you’re always safe and supported.

03

Ongoing assessment

You’ll have a combination of physiotherapy and occupational therapy for up to 3 hours a day. This will be in one of our on-site rehabilitation gyms, in our state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool or in both, depending on what’s best for you.

You’ll be expertly monitored at every stage to minimise the risk of injury. Between sessions, you’ll be encouraged to rest and recover.

Where can I access the rehabilitation after surgery programme?

You can access this programme at The Wellington Hospital where you’ll stay in the comfort of our inpatient bedrooms, with access to additional on-site nursing care should you need it.
