WHAT TO EXPECT

About your child’s time with us
A little extra time, compassion and holistic support can make all the difference to your child and that’s what our paediatric dentistry teams offer. We want your child to feel safe and cared for, every step of the way.

Your child’s experience will vary depending on the procedure they’re having, but the overview below gives you a good idea of what to expect.

01

Preparation

Our dedicated pre-assessment team will carry out a medical assessment to check that your child is fit and ready for anaesthesia. They’ll also give you detailed instructions about how to prepare for your child’s appointment, including fasting guidelines.

02

Going to sleep

A consultant anaesthetist will carefully administer the general anaesthetic, and your child will be asleep and comfortable within minutes.

03

Treatment

Their paediatric dentist will perform the necessary dental treatments, staying focused on the surgery while your child safely sleeps.

04

Recovery

Your child will be taken to a recovery area where they’ll be monitored until they wake. They’ll then be moved to the ward, where they’ll be looked after by the paediatric nursing team. They’ll only be discharged when it is safe for them to go home.

Paediatric dentistry FAQs

Yes, general anaesthesia is very safe for young children, so long as it’s performed by a skilled paediatric anaesthetist in a hospital designed for the care of young people.

Our teams are all trained to ensure your child’s safety and comfort before, during and after any procedure they may need.

Yes, of course. Your child will have a thorough pre-operative assessment. This is an opportunity to review their health, discuss their upcoming operation and address any concerns you may have. Your child’s safety and comfort are our priorities and you’re free to ask questions at every stage.
Very young children and children with severe anxiety, special healthcare needs or who need extensive dental treatment requirements may benefit from having a general anaesthetic before their treatment.
It’s particularly recommended if they need any of the following:
  • Tooth extractions
  • Restorations (fillings or crowns)
  • Pulp therapy (nerve treatments)
  • Treatment for extensive cavities
  • Oral surgery including surgical extractions or exposure of impacted teeth

Having a general anaesthetic might make sense for your child for several reasons including:

  • Comfort: Your child won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure
  • Efficiency: All the necessary dental work can be completed in one visit, reducing the need for multiple appointments
  • Reduced stress: It can greatly help with anxiety for children who fear dental treatments
  • Safety: Our state-of-the-art hospital setting provides access to advanced equipment and emergency care in the unlikely event that it’s needed
It depends on the treatment they’ve had but most children recover quickly and can go home the same day. They might feel a little drowsy for a few hours, but they usually bounce back to their normal activities by the next day.
Yes, this is one of our areas of specialism at the Portland Hospital. We have a great deal of experience helping children with serious underlying medical conditions, such as heart disease, kidney disease, immune system disorders and bleeding disorders, who all need dental care in an expertly controlled hospital environment.

Carrying out their dentistry at The Portland Hospital means that we have access to all the medical specialists and equipment we need to monitor your child’s condition and manage any potential complications that arise during treatment. Your child’s safety always comes first.

Dr Kalkani was fantastic for my daughter’s treatment. Her care and approach to my daughter pre-treatment and her work during the operation were flawless. Highly recommend.
