Our IVF/ICSI birth rates

To give you a useful overview, we calculate the overall average number of successful births we achieve per embryo transferred for all treatments we carry out across our clinics. That includes everything from fresh cycles to frozen transfers, treatments using donor eggs and treatment using PGT-A. It also includes the subset of fresh stimulated embryos involving the patient’s own eggs.

This measure doesn’t incorporate outcomes for procedures that don’t reach that first embryo transfer stage.

With HCA UK, safety always comes first, so we always communicate this figure as the number of births per embryo transferred. Reporting it this way promotes embryo transfer practices that minimise the chances of twins, which carry additional health risks for the babies and their mother.

Please note that all the statistics shared below relate to treatments carried out from January to December 2022. Lister Fertility Clinic at The Portland only opened in May 2022, which is reflected in these figures.

Multiple birth rates

01/01/2023 to 31/12/2023

For some people, being told that you’re having twins may feel like a wonderful thing. While some multiple pregnancies are perfectly safe, they do carry more risks for both mother and babies. That’s why HFEA has set a target for all clinics to have a multiple birth rate of 10% or less. At both the Lister Fertility Clinic and Lister Fertility Clinic at The Portland Hospital we are consistent with national average.

THE PORTLAND

  • 0% of women we treated under 38 has a multiple birth, based on a total of 55 births.
  • 3% of women we treated of 38 years old and over had a multiple birth, based on a total of 31 births.
  • An average of 1% of women across age groups had a multiple birth.

NATIONAL RATE

  • 3% of women who had treatment under 38 had a multiple birth.
  • 4% of women who had treatment of 38 years old and over had a multiple birth.
  • That’s an average of 3% of women nationally having a multiple birth.

Our fertility success rate FAQ

The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) now recommends that clinic success rates are predominantly presented as livebirth per embryo transferred (PET). This promotes embryo transfer practices that minimise the chance of twins, which carry health risks for both the babies and their mother. That makes it a fairer assessment of outcomes.

Unfortunately, the unnecessary transfer of multiple embryos still occurs in some places, even though it’s against national guidelines and carries risks. This approach can be used to artificially inflate success rates.
The cost of your treatment will depend on the type of testing you opt for. Please take a look at our latest price list and if you have any questions, feel free to get in touch. We’ll do everything we can to help.
Of course, success rates are important, but they’re just one of a range of factors that you should consider when comparing fertility centres and choosing where to seek treatment. These include the ethos of the clinic, the expertise of the teams, your chemistry with a particular consultant and a clinic’s convenience and proximity to your home. Information on success rates can also be a useful decision tool, but it should always be considered alongside these other factors.

HFEA has a great resource you can use to help you help you look at the success rate data for all the fertility clinics across the UK, so you can consider that alongside other important factors to help you select the best clinic for you. You can access it here

Because personal chemistry matters, at HCA UK we have a choice of 10 female and male fertility specialists working at the Lister Fertility Clinic and across our satellite branches.

A fertility add-on is an optional extra, such as a reproductive immunology treatment, that you may be offered on top of your normal fertility treatment, often at an additional cost. They typically use emerging techniques, that may have shown some promising results in initial studies but haven’t necessarily been proven to improve pregnancy or birth rates. We offer a number of these at HCA UK.

HFEA is the independent regulator of fertility treatment and research for the UK. It uses a rating system to assess add-on treatments. To see HFEA’s ratings and guidance for add-on treatments, including reproductive immunology, please click here.

My husband and I were delighted that our first round of ICSI IVF was successful, and we now have a 3-week-old baby girl after 5 years of trying to conceive. She was our only embryo available for transfer (none left to freeze). Thank you so much all at Lister. We are now complete.
