The Portland Hospital Maternity Tour FAQs

At The Portland Hospital, you’ll have access to a range of supportive services designed to make your experience as comfortable and comprehensive as possible. These include:

  • Infant feeding specialists to provide support and advice.
  • Women’s physiotherapy specialists to aid postnatal recovery.
  • Newborn hearing screening provided by a dedicated screening team.
  • Bedside birth registration, saving you a trip to the registry office.
  • Free passport photos for your baby, available during your stay.

At The Portland Hospital, you can choose between consultant-led or midwife-led care for your birth.

  • Consultant-led: A consultant obstetrician oversees your antenatal care and labour, and will be present for the birth and delivery of your baby. You’ll have one-to-one care and support from an experienced midwife during this time.
  • Midwife-led: A midwife will lead your antenatal care, providing one-to-one, hands-on support throughout your labour and the birth of your baby, with the reassurance that a named consultant obstetrician is on call and close to the hospital during your labour.

A consultant anaesthetist is available on-site 24/7 for medical support and pain relief on the labour ward.

On the postnatal ward, our midwifery team ensures there’s a staff member for every four patients, so you can rest assured that expert help is always at hand.

Yes. We have a dedicated Neonatal Unit (NICU/SCBU) on the third floor, providing specialist care for:

  • Full-term babies needing extra support after birth.
  • Premature babies born from 28 weeks’ gestation.

The unit has six cots and a highly experienced neonatal medical and nursing team, supported by allied health professionals such as physiotherapists and speech and language therapists.

Care ranges from special care (SCBU) up to short-term intensive care (NICU) levels.

We can manage most obstetric emergencies on-site, with consultant obstetricians, anaesthetists and a full theatre team available 24/7.

If you need intensive care, you may be transferred by private ambulance to another HCA UK hospital (The Princess Grace or The Harley Street Clinic). If you don’t have insurance, we can arrange a transfer to a nearby NHS hospital. You’ll always be accompanied by a clinical escort, and your consultant will hand over your care.

All our rooms come with 24-hour room service, including breakfast for self-pay partners. Meals can be ordered at any time of day, and there’s an in-room coffee machine for added convenience.

The Portland offers a choice of private ensuite rooms across several levels:

  • 1 premier suite
  • 3 suites
  • 2 deluxe rooms
  • 10 standard rooms

All rooms include:

  • A fold-out bed for a partner or support person to stay overnight
  • A safe for valuables
  • Toiletries and essentials (pads and disposable underwear are provided)
  • Cots, nappies, blankets and towels provided for your baby
  • Access to nursery nurses 24 hours a day

All our rooms are modern and comfortable, designed to help you recover in private, calming surroundings.

Pool rooms can’t be pre-booked, as availability will depend on when you go into labour. However, if you request the pool when calling the labour ward, we’ll do our very best to accommodate your preference based on room availability and workload.
