Mr Syed Soulat Raza is a Consultant Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgeon specialising in diseases affecting the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts. He is based in the Liver Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and also consults with private patients at The Harborne Hospital. Fluent in English, Urdu, and Punjabi, he treats both benign and malignant conditions. His skillset includes both minimally invasive (keyhole) and open surgical techniques, and he has significant experience in performing single-stage procedures to remove the gallbladder and treat bile duct stones. He also leads Birmingham’s programme for Normothermic Regional Perfusion, an advanced method used in liver transplantation.
He earned his medical degree from Baqai Medical University in Karachi in 2004, followed by early surgical training in West Yorkshire and Leeds. He then spent three years working in the specialist liver, pancreas, and transplant unit at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds. Subsequently, he completed higher surgical training in the West Midlands with a focus on liver, pancreatic, and transplant surgery, finishing his training in the Liver Unit before being appointed as a Consultant.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Mr Raza has authored and contributed to numerous research publications in surgical journals. He is actively involved in surgical education as Programme Director for the Midlands FRCS course and serves as Treasurer of the West Midlands Surgical Society. Outside his professional work, he enjoys reading history and playing tennis with his daughters.
