Mr Syed Soulat Raza is a Consultant hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeon who treats conditions of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts. He works in the Liver Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and also sees private patients at The Harborne Hospital. He speaks English, Urdu and Punjabi, and cares for patients with both benign and cancerous conditions. His expertise includes keyhole and open surgery and he is highly experienced in removing the gallbladder and clearing bile duct stones in a single procedure. He also leads the Birmingham programme for Normothermic Regional Perfusion, an advanced technique used in liver transplantation.
He graduated from Baqai Medical University in Karachi in 2004, before completing his early surgical training in West Yorkshire and Leeds. He then spent three years working in the specialist liver, pancreas and transplant unit at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds. After this, he undertook higher surgical training in the West Midlands, focusing on liver, pancreas and transplant surgery and completed his final years of training in the Liver Unit before being appointed as a consultant.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Raza has written and contributed to many research papers in surgical journals. He is committed to training future surgeons and is the Programme Director for the Midlands FRCS course, as well as Treasurer of the West Midlands Surgical Society. Outside of work, he enjoys reading history and playing tennis with his daughters.
