Mr Stephen Metcalfe is a dedicated and highly skilled Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon working at The Harborne Hospital. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2001 and completed his neurosurgical training in Newcastle and Middlesbrough, before undertaking a specialist spinal fellowship in Adelaide, Australia.
Mr Metcalfe manages all aspects of spinal neurosurgery, excluding complex spinal deformity. His practice covers degenerative spinal conditions, spinal trauma and spinal tumours, with a particular specialist interest in intramedullary and intradural tumours.
Alongside his clinical work, he has a strong commitment to medical education and surgical training. He currently serves as a Royal College of Surgeons of England Surgical Tutor at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where he plays an important role in supporting and developing future surgeons. He is also a member of the national Specialty Advisory Committee for Neurosurgery.
Mr Metcalfe is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is an active member of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, the British Association of Spine Surgeons, and AO Spine.
