Dr. Sara Hillman holds the positions of associate professor and Consultant Obstetrician & Foetal Medicine specialist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), where she oversees all aspects of pregnancy management, including both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies. With a particular focus on complex fetal and maternal prenatal issues, Dr. Hillman delivers comprehensive care at UCLH and leads a weekly fetal medicine scanning clinic, specialising in complex fetal anomalies with possible genetic causes.
Dr. Hillman earned her medical degree from University College London in 2003, supplemented by a BSc. in neuroscience. In 2014, she completed her PhD, which explored the influence of genes and environment on fetal growth. In her academic capacity, Dr. Hillman is dedicated to promoting medical education, serving as the academic training program director for the London School Obstetrics and Gynaecology and offering guidance as an educational/clinical supervisor to junior doctors.
Dr. Hillman is actively engaged in quality improvement initiatives at UCLH, leading projects such as pre-eclampsia screening and the introduction of a dedicated service for turning breech babies to facilitate safer vaginal birth. She has also conducted research on the added value of genetic testing for foetal structural anomalies, with her findings published recently.
In addition to her clinical and educational roles, Dr. Hillman leads numerous research initiatives, focusing on understanding the mechanisms underlying pre-eclampsia and foetal growth restriction. Her research group, funded by the Medical Research Council, investigates cell communication within pregnancy tissues, including the foetus, placenta, and womb. She also collaborates on studies exploring new technologies to reduce stillbirth and investigate normal human development.
Passionate about improving maternal and foetal health globally, Dr. Hillman has led several international projects addressing issues such as anaemia, poor foetal growth, and severe obstetric complications. She is committed to advancing healthcare practices and enhancing patient outcomes through her multifaceted roles in clinical care, research, education, and quality improvement.
