Professor Kefah Mokbel is widely regarded as a leading figure in oncoplastic breast surgery on the international stage. He established the Department of Breast Cancer Surgery at the London Breast Institute and continues to serve as its Chair.
He obtained his medical degree from the London Hospital Medical College (now part of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London) in 1990. His surgical training took place across several major London centres, including the Royal Marsden, Charing Cross, Chelsea and Westminster, St Mary’s and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals. By 2000, he had completed specialist training in oncoplastic breast surgery, earning numerous competitive awards throughout both his training period and subsequent academic career.
Professor Mokbel became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1994. In 2000, he was awarded a Master of Surgery degree by Imperial College London for his research on breast cancer molecular biology.
In 2001, he was appointed as a substantive Consultant Breast Surgeon at St George’s Hospital NHS Trust, a post he held until 2010. He later became an Honorary Consultant Breast Surgeon at the same institution. His contributions to research and education led to his appointment as Honorary Professor of Breast Cancer Surgery at Brunel University London in 2006 and Reader in Breast Surgery at St George’s University of London in 2005. In January 2025, he also took up the role of Honorary Professor of Medicine at Cardiff University School of Medicine.
His clinical expertise includes early detection of breast cancer; rapid evaluation of breast lumps; management of breast pain, DCIS, LCIS and nipple discharge; minimally invasive procedures; sentinel lymph node biopsy; wireless breast localisation (including Savi Scout, Magseed and RFID technologies); advanced oncoplastic breast surgery; lipofilling; skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy; ADM/mesh-supported pre-pectoral implant reconstruction; breast cancer prevention and risk assessment; MRI evaluation; prophylactic surgery for carriers of BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB2 mutations; and the full spectrum of benign breast conditions. He also has substantial experience in both reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery.
Professor Mokbel remains actively engaged in research on both the molecular mechanisms of breast cancer and contemporary clinical practice in breast, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. He has written or co-written more than 400 peer-reviewed publications, chapters, editorials and commentaries, along with 14 textbooks for trainees and medical students. His current academic interests centre on integrating high-quality clinical trial evidence into routine surgical decision-making.
According to Google Scholar, he holds an H-index of 61 — the highest among practising breast cancer surgeons in London. He is a member of editorial boards for several international journals and acts as a peer reviewer for leading publications including The Lancet. He has supervised and examined numerous higher degrees (MD, MS, MSc) and PhD candidates.
He is also the founder and current President of Breast Cancer Hope, a charitable organisation dedicated to improving outcomes and quality of life for individuals affected by breast cancer. His work has been recognised by repeated listings in Tatler’s Best Doctors Guide (2006, 2007, 2013 and 2025) and The Times’ compilation of Britain’s Top Doctors (2010).
