Professor Dunaway is a consultant Plastic Surgeon with a special interest in facial reconstruction, facial aesthetic surgery and plastic surgery for children. He graduated from Manchester medical school in 1989. Professor Dunaway trained in a number of renowned hospitals in Leeds, Newcastle, London and Adelaide in Australia before qualifying as a Plastic Surgeon in 1996. In addition to his surgical training he also qualified as a dentist in 1980 and is a Fellow of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Professor Dunaway was initially appointed as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in Scotland before being invited to join the team at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in 2000.
He proudly leads the world famous craniofacial unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and is actively involved in teaching and research, both nationally and internationally. He is one of the few plastic surgeons who provide specialist care to children within the private sector.
In his private practice, Professor Dunaway undertakes most aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery including facial rejuvenation, facelifts, rhinoplasties (nose reshaping), blepharoplasties (eyelid surgery)and custom made PEEK implants.
Thanks to his extensive expertise in the field he is highly skilled in performing surgery on children for vascular malformations, skin lesions and deformities of the face.
Named by ‘The Times’ as one of Britain’s top surgeons and top children’s doctors, David is an expert in facial & reconstructive plastic surgery, in both adults and children and in treating congenital or acquired deformities. He is a pioneer in the use of custom-made facial implants and one of the very few surgeons who offer this unique & sought-after procedure.
Professor Dunaway is past president of the plastic surgery section of the Royal Society of Medicine and Secretary General of the European Society of Craniofacial Surgeons. He undertakes voluntary work in Africa and is a Trustee of Facing Africa, a British charity treating African children with Craniofacial Deformity.
In 2016 Professor Dunaway received a CBE for services to facial surgery.
