Mr Paul Sutton is a consultant specialising in general and colorectal surgery. He consults with private patients at HCA The Wilmslow Hospital and The Christie Clinic, and also serves as director of the Cheshire Bowel Clinic.
Mr Sutton manages a broad spectrum of abdominal and bowel-related conditions, as well as issues affecting the anal region and common surgical problems such as hernias. In addition, he leads the endoscopy unit, performing procedures including gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy. He is widely recognised for his expertise in colorectal cancer surgery, with his NHS work based at the internationally renowned Christie Hospital. There, he treats patients with advanced, recurrent, and metastatic colorectal cancer, carrying out complex and highly specialised operations such as pelvic exenteration, sacrectomy, and cytoreductive surgery combined with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
Background
After graduating from the University of Nottingham in 2006, Mr Sutton undertook postgraduate training in Nottingham, Manchester, and Liverpool. He was subsequently awarded a Clinical Research Training Fellowship by Cancer Research UK, through which he completed a PhD focused on improving responses to chemotherapy and radiotherapy in colorectal cancer. His research achievements were recognised with the John of Arderne medal from the Royal Society of Medicine and the Arris & Gale medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Mr Sutton went on to complete additional fellowship training, including the European Society of Peritoneal Surface Oncology fellowship and the European Board of Surgical Qualification in Surgical Oncology, where he achieved the top examination result. He also trained at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, a leading global centre for advanced pelvic cancer treatment. In 2021, he returned to The Christie Hospital to begin his role as a consultant and has been practising at The Christie Private Care and The Wilmslow Hospital since 2022.
