Mr Paul Sutton is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon who consults with private patients at The Wilmslow Hospital and The Christie.
He manages individuals with a broad spectrum of abdominal and bowel-related concerns, as well as conditions affecting the anal region and common surgical issues such as hernias. In addition, he serves as the lead clinician for the endoscopy unit, performing procedures including gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy. Mr Sutton is widely recognised for his expertise in colorectal cancer surgery, with his NHS work based at the internationally renowned Christie Hospital. There, he cares for patients with advanced, recurrent, and metastatic colorectal cancer, carrying out highly specialised and complex procedures such as pelvic exenteration, sacrectomy, and cytoreductive surgery combined with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
Background
After graduating from the University of Nottingham in 2006, Mr Sutton undertook postgraduate training in Nottingham, Manchester, and Liverpool. He was subsequently awarded a Clinical Research Training Fellowship by Cancer Research UK, during which he completed a PhD focused on improving responses to chemotherapy and radiotherapy in colorectal cancer. His research achievements were recognised with the John of Arderne medal from the Royal Society of Medicine and the Arris & Gale medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
He went on to complete advanced fellowship training, including a fellowship with the European Society of Peritoneal Surface Oncology and the European Board of Surgical Qualification in Surgical Oncology, where he achieved the highest mark in the examination. Mr Sutton also gained further specialist experience at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, a leading global centre for advanced pelvic malignancy. He returned to The Christie Hospital in 2021 to begin his consultant role and has also been practising at The Christie Private Care and The Wilmslow Hospital since 2022.
