Mr Murali Somasundaram is a London-based Consultant General Surgeon with a specialist interest in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgery. He currently serves as Consultant General Surgeon and Clinical Lead for General Surgery at Barnet and Chase Farm NHS Hospitals, having progressed to the clinical lead position within just 12 months of joining the department.
His specialist surgical background includes a significant period as a Senior Clinical Fellow in HPB and Liver Transplant Surgery at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. During his surgical training in North Central London, he gained broad experience across a number of complex specialties, including HPB and transplant surgery, as well as vascular, colorectal, bariatric and Upper GI surgery.
Earlier in his career, Mr Somasundaram worked as a Surgical Research Fellow in Transplantation at the Oxford Transplant Centre and Northwick Park Institute for Medical Research. His research in this role focused on tissue engineering and the development of engineered abdominal organs.
Academically, he holds a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Surgical Sciences from the University of Oxford and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS). He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Queen Mary University of London in 2005, following completion of a Bachelor's degree in Clinical Materials in 2004. In recognition of his leadership, he received the Chairman’s Award for Leadership for Barnet Hospital in 2025.
Mr Somasundaram places strong emphasis on delivering personalised, patient-centred surgical care. He brings extensive general surgical training and specialist expertise to his practice, with a particular clinical focus on gallbladder surgery.
