Mr Butt is a highly experienced, fellowship-trained consultant specialising in shoulder and upper limb surgery. He is listed on the Specialist Register for Trauma & Orthopaedics. He graduated with honours from the University of Birmingham in 2004, and completed his core surgical training in the Midlands, gaining broad experience across orthopaedics, emergency medicine, vascular and plastic surgery. He then returned to Manchester to undertake higher specialist training in orthopaedics, culminating in the award of Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 2012.
Usman pursued advanced subspecialty training through prestigious UK and international fellowships in shoulder, upper limb, and sports injury surgery. In the UK, he trained at the renowned Wrightington Upper Limb Unit and the Stockport Shoulder Unit. Internationally, he completed competitively awarded travelling fellowships in shoulder, elbow, and sports surgery in Milan, Italy, and at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. His elective surgical practice is dedicated to upper limb conditions, with a particular focus on conditions around the shoulder. His clinical expertise includes tendon and rotator cuff disorders, shoulder instability and labral injuries, arthritis, stiffness and traumatic injuries. Usman is actively involved in research and education, having authored numerous peer reviewed articles and book chapters on upper limb and orthopaedic surgery.
His work has been presented at leading international conferences and has earned multiple awards for excellence. His NHS practice base is at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Outside of medicine, Usman enjoys playing cricket and travelling with his family.
