Mr. Shaw Somers is a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon. He completed his specialist surgical training in Leeds, London, and Hong Kong. He was made an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong in 1995 before being appointed as a consultant specialist surgeon in 1996. Mr. Somers has a specialist interest in oesophageal disorders and stomach surgery. He pioneered many keyhole (laparoscopic) procedures and developed new techniques for managing failed or complicated Bariatric procedures. He founded and directed an upper gastro-intestinal unit and developed one of the most successful practices of Obesity Surgery in the South of England. He has performed over 2800 bariatric procedures, and his specialist team carries out over 500 of these per year. He is also one of the few surgeons in the UK that regularly carries out ‘revision' bariatric surgery. He was the past-President of the British Obesity Surgery Society (2017-19) and a Council Member for the Association of Upper GI Surgeons.
