Dr Richard Lee is an experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon who has a special interest in Glaucoma, Cataract, and General Ophthalmology. Based at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, he is the Clinical Lead of the Ophthalmology service and the lead clinician of the Cataract and Glaucoma service. Dr Lee's expertise lies in the medical, laser, and surgical management of all adult glaucoma, including complex and secondary glaucomas.
Dr Lee obtained his medical training at the prestigious University College London and completed his specialist ophthalmology training in the London Deanery. During his training, he was elected to represent the trainees in his region at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and represented the Royal College at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. He also served on the committees of the British Ophthalmic Anaesthesia Society and the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Dr Lee is an active researcher with a particular interest in surgical innovation. He has published over 50 papers, including several book chapters, and delivered over 25 presentations at local, national, and international levels. He also completed an MSc in Surgical Technology at Imperial College London and received a distinction award for his thesis on optimizing an artificial cornea device. He then completed a clinical research fellowship funded by the National Institute for Health Research to develop a new surgical glaucoma device, leading to the award of a PhD in Ophthalmology at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and a prestigious international Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology translational research award.
After completing his training, Dr Lee undertook a subspecialty surgical fellowship in glaucoma at Moorfields Eye Hospital before taking up his current role at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
