About

Professor Long Jiao is Professor of Surgery, Chair and Consultant in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at Hammersmith Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare) and Lead for Robotic Hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at the Royal Marsden Hospital. He sees patients privately at a number of locations including the Princess Grace and Wellington Hospitals.

He is also lead Surgeon and an academic Professor at Imperial College and the Royal Marsden, where he is in charge of specialist training in general surgery at Northwest London as training programme director and an intercollegiate examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh (FRCS).

Professor Jiao is actively involved in research and this is focused on Micro RNAs, circulating tumour cells (CTCs) and liver regeneration. As a first, he described CTCs residing in organs local to pancreatic or colon cancers and he identified 3mRNAs to differentiate benign from premalignant pancreatic cystic tumours for the early detection of cancer.

Professor Jiao set up the first robotic HPB programme in the UK. He performs a range of innovative surgical methods, including the largest number of laparoscopic and robotic liver and pancreatic resections. He treats patients where appropriate with laparoscopic and robotic Whipples and he performed the first robotic Whipple Procedure in the UK. In liver surgery, he introduced radiofrequency-assisted liver partition with portal vein ligation for staged liver resection. This allowed an increase in the number of patients for liver surgery, who are usually considered unresectable, by inducing liver hyperthrophy preoperatively to avoid liver failure based on his expertise in radio frequency. He has also published papers on the use of radiofrequncy in the management of liver tumours.
