John Murphy

John Murphy is a highly experienced Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon, specialising in the full spectrum of breast conditions, from benign problems to complex cancer care and advanced cosmetic surgery.

Mr Murphy is a specialist in all types of breast problems, including breast pain, lumps, cosmetic concerns, and cancer-related conditions. His clinical expertise spans breast cancer surgery, breast reconstruction, male breast surgery, cosmetic breast surgery, and fat transfer techniques. His particular sub-specialist interest lies in revisional cosmetic breast surgery and risk-reducing breast surgery for patients at increased genetic or familial risk of breast cancer.

He appears on the GMC Specialist Register and is currently a Consultant Breast Surgeon at the Nightingale and Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre, based at the University Hospital of South Manchester—the largest breast unit in the UK and one of the busiest breast screening centres nationally.

Mr Murphy graduated in 2000 and began his career in breast surgery in 2001. During his specialist training, he completed two prestigious TIG National Fellowships. These fellowships were undertaken under the mentorship of leading plastic and breast reconstructive surgeons. He completed his surgical training in 2013 and was appointed as a Consultant in South Manchester immediately thereafter.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Murphy is an active educator and trainer. He supervises medical students and trainee breast and plastic surgeons at both local and national levels and is a tutor on the Master’s programme in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. He has also completed a period of academic research culminating in the award of a PhD, has authored numerous peer-reviewed research papers in breast surgery, and regularly presents his work at national and international conferences.
