About
Mr Carlos Cobiella is a distinguished Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon affiliated with University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He graduated from Medical School at the Universidad Autonoma in Madrid, Spain and completed his initial surgical training in London. Following this, he pursued specialised training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. He further honed his expertise in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery through focused training at the Shoulder and Elbow Unit and the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit at the same institution.
His career path led him to the Whittington Hospital in 2003, where he initiated and established the Shoulder and Elbow service. Two years later, he transitioned to UCLH (University College London Hospitals) where he served as a leader of a dedicated team of Shoulder and Hand surgeons.
Mr Cobiella is the visionary behind The Shoulder Practice and spearheads the Upper Limb section at the ISEH (Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health), one of the globally recognized research centres endorsed by the International Olympic Committee. He notably contributed to the medical team during the London 2012 Olympics and holds membership in the NFL Physician Society.
His clinical scope covers a comprehensive array of shoulder and elbow conditions, ranging from sports injuries to arthritis and fractures. His expertise is particularly pronounced in arthroscopic techniques for complex instability treatment and rotator cuff repair, incorporating graft augmentation.
Notably, Mr Cobiella remains deeply invested in medical education and training for medical students and junior doctors. He frequently participates as faculty in both national and international courses focused on Arthroscopic and Sports Injury Surgery. He has co-authored multiple research publications and is a regular presenter at scientific conferences. As the founder and convener of the annual London Shoulder Meeting, he has contributed significantly to establishing this conference as the largest independent Shoulder and Elbow event in the UK.
Internationally, he engages in study groups that are dedicated to developing innovative strategies for managing complex instability cases, often involving bone loss, and addressing rotator cuff tears through novel graft augmentation techniques, all with the aim of enhancing repair and restoring normal function to patients.
