Mr. Aman Coonar is an experienced consultant thoracic surgeon known for his patient-centered approach, expressing his dedication by stating, "I love getting to know my patients, understanding their problems, and giving them the best care I can."
Currently serving as the National Lead for Thoracic Surgery for the NHS, Mr. Coonar was elected as President of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery for the term 2025-7 (www.scts.org). He has previously held the position of President of the Royal Society of Medicine cardiothoracic section.

As the senior practicing thoracic surgeon at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, which is rated as Outstanding by the CQC, Mr. Coonar served as the clinical lead, contributing to some of the best lung cancer survival outcomes after surgery and ensuring the best patient experience.
Co-author of the popular textbook "Thoracic Surgery Techniques," Mr. Coonar's chapters have garnered thousands of downloads. He sees NHS patients in Cambridge and private patients in Cambridge, London, overseas, and online. Engaged in charitable work in India and other locations, he remains active in research and service/quality improvement.
Leading the MERITS study, the largest worldwide study of renal impairment after thoracic surgery, Mr. Coonar has overseen national lung volume reduction and pectus programs.
His diverse interests include fast track surgery and enhanced recovery, minimally invasive surgery such as VATS and Robotics, complex surgery, and providing second opinions. He specializes in early and advanced cancers, sarcoma, metastases to the chest, mesothelioma, mediastinal problems (including thymoma and myasthenia gravis), sequestrations, chest and trunk resection and reconstruction, chest trauma, rib fractures, slipped rib, broken costal margin, ruptured chest syndrome, chest wall pain, lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema/COPD, pneumothorax, empyema, pleural effusions, airway, bronchoscopy, and stents, and thoracic thyroid.
